Canalith Repositioning – Semont Maneuver
for Benign Postional Vertigo

A common cause of vertigo is benign positional vertigo (BPV), also known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This vertigo is usually due to free-floating, misplaced otoliths that have inappropriately entered one of the semicircular canals of the inner ear.
The Epley maneuver, or canalith repositioning procedure (CRP), was invented by John Epley. The Epley maneuver with various modifications can be used to move these otoliths out of the posterior or anterior semicircular canals and place them in the utricle where they belong. The Semont Maneuver is useful when the Epley maneuver fails to remove particles or when particles are suspected to have become adherent to the cupula of the semicircular canals (cupulolithiasis).
